Qualifications Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland
 
To qualify for The Long Nguyen and Kimmy Duong Undergraduate Scholarship Program
in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, applicants must:
 
  • Be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, and
  • Be enrolled at one of the following institutions:
    • University of Maryland
    • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
    • University of Virginia
    • Northern Virginia Community College
    • Montgomery College
    • Virginia Commonwealth University
    • University of the District of Columbia
    • Towson University (New)
    • James Madison University (New)
Students attending George Mason University must apply through a special application link (to be determined).
GMU and the Kimmy Duong Foundation (KDF) will jointly coordinate the recipient selection
process.
 
Scholarship Benefits and Commitments
 
Scholarship recipients receive both a financial award and an opportunity for professional
development through job training with industry professionals in their chosen field of study.
To support this goal, each recipient is required to attend quarterly meetings with a
professional mentor in the Washington, D.C. area.
 
To accept the scholarship, recipients must:
 
  • Be present at the award ceremony, and
  • Attend semi-annual mandatory meetings organized by the foundation.

 

Additional Qualifications
 
  1. Vietnamese heritage (for Vietnamese American applicants)
  2. Between 17 and 30 years of age
  3. Outstanding academic achievement (minimum GPA of 3.0)
  4. Strong leadership potential
  5. Demonstrated community service to the Vietnamese and/or American communities
  6. Knowledge and appreciation of one’s cultural heritage (Vietnamese, American, or other)
  7. Commitment to creating a better world
  8. Passion for protecting the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights worldwide
  9. Demonstrated financial need
 
Additional Requirements for Vietnamese Students (from Vietnam)
 
  1. Provide documentation of the current family financial situation
  2. Applicants may not be from a Vietnamese government official’s family or a Vietnamese Communist Party family
 
Special Consideration
 
Priority may be given to applicants with unique or challenging circumstances, including:
  • Individuals from low- to moderate-income households
  • Single parents returning to school to improve their family’s future
  • Students rebuilding their lives after overcoming past criminal records
